When Designing Flyers, Make Your Headlines Count

Flyer Design

Flyer Design- Make Your Headline CountIn business a great way of getting your message across is with a flyer or leaflet. They are a brilliant tool for marketing as they make it possible to accurately communicate an idea without your message becoming confused. The act of actually giving your customer a something physical can also bring a lot of power to your advertising.

There are many things that make up a great flyer and I have spoken in the past (at great length!) about what these are and how best to employ them. You can spend a lot of money and time fine-tuning your leaflet design. Body text, graphics and colours are all important factors- but all your handwork could be to no avail if your customers don’t actually read your message.

Today I want to reinforce the one thing that is the most important part- the headline.

Make Your Headline Count

The headline may well be the only part of your leaflet potential customers read, so make it count! Make sure it is where you keep the most important element- the point of your message. For example if you are offering a discount from one of your services, make sure you say that loud and proud- “10% Off Our Services!”. If you want people to look at your brand new website, make that clear- “Visit Our New Website!”. If announcing a new product is your aim, put that first- “We’re Selling This Now!”.

Check Your Position

So now you know what to say (the obvious!) there are a few ways to make sure that they are seen. The first is positioning- make sure your headline is in the correct place. Think of your traditional newspaper headline- is it at the top of the paper? NO! hundreds of years of news marketing has led the media to make sure their headlines are always about one third of the way down the sheet- this is often called the ‘eye line’ as it is the place our eyes will naturally search for the lead message. We are pre-programmed to check this area first for the most important information. Place your headline here.

Check Your Size

The second is SIZE. Make sure your headline is the largest text on the page. Again years and years of typography design has programmed us to place text in a hierarchy based on physical size. We automatically judge the largest thing on the page as the most important and read that first. Use bold typefaces with uncomplicated designs to maximise this impact and you are on to a sure fire winner.

Check Your Colour

The final thing I’m going to mention is colour. Make sure your headline is a colour which contrasts well with its surrounding space. Don’t lose your text by writing it in the same hue as the image or space behind it. Don’t confuse it by using a selection of colours across it. Take a few steps back – if you can still read it easily then you’ve got it right.

If you’ve got these points covered then you will have got your message across- even if your potential customers don’t read another word. Job done :)
