Designing Invitations – Our Top Tips

Designing Invitations at Print ColchesterThink Beautiful When Designing Invitations

Everybody loves a party, and whether it’s a new baby, a wedding, or the opening of your new business – an excellent way of announcing the big event is with an invitation. Receiving some beautiful print work through the post can really help events stick in people’s minds (and calendars). So if you are having a go at designing invitations for your next shindig, check out these top tips to make a big impression.

Start small

Invitations are the kind of print work that often get pinned onto a pin-board or stuck under a magnet on the fridge. To make sure they stay there work to a nice neat size, no-one wants to nail an A4 sheet onto their cork-board. The very largest we would recommend is an A5 card. Keeping within this size also can help you save on postage – anything larger may incur an extra fee at the Post Office.

Celebratory or Ceremonial

Your event may be a children’s party, or a funeral – so make sure you let your guest know what to expect through the use of colour and typeface choice. If you are planning your little one’s 5th birthday use bright primary colours and heavy fun fonts. If you are inviting people to a seminar on debt collection, maybe choose a more official colour scheme and typeface. For a fun little guide regarding typeface choice, check out this infographic.

Keep it Neat

The easiest way of designing invitations is by sticking to a centre justified design. This scheme has been employed for centuries and works just as brilliantly now as it always will. Make sure you leave plenty of space around the type and if you must include an image, make it count!

Choose Your Stock

The paper supply you choose can make a big impact on the impression you make with your invitation. For weddings, christenings and official events we would advise a traditional heavy board, such as those supplied by Conqueror. For gatherings and parties, as well as corporate events,  a smooth white board would provide best colour reproduction. To finish it all off it is best to use matching envelopes, traditionally of the ‘diamond flap’ variety.

And if it all goes wrong?
